Series 230-High Volume (HiVol) Cascade Impactors
Series 230 HiVol cascade impactors attached to any high volume air sampler and fractionates
suspended particulates into as many as six different size fractions. The slotted impactor design
separates particulates from larger than 7.2µm to less than .49µm while operating at a flow rate of
40cfm. The cascade design of this impactor collects particles on small light weight substrates that
are analysed for respirable particulate matter. There are several models available with 1, 4, 5, and 6
impactor stages allowing for ultimate flexibility.
Suspended particulates enter through the HiVol cascade impactor through the first set of parallel
slots on the first stage. Particulates that are too large to travel to the next stage are impacted on the
collection substrate and the smaller particles remain in the air stream and travel to the next stage.
The slots on each stage are the same width but as the particulates continue through, the slots
become successively smaller and most of the particulates will eventually become impacted on one of
the collection stages. After the last stage the smallest particles will be collected on the backup filter
which will be weighed for particle size distribution.
